Why EdgeConsults

EdgeConsults exists because most research labs and biotech startups can’t hire a full-time bioinformatician, ML engineer, and DevOps person, and shouldn’t have to. We provide the exact expertise you need, for exactly as long as you need it, at rates that fit federal grant budgets.

With a Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and a B.S. in Computer Science, founder Edwin Solares bridges the gap between biological research and production engineering, from genome assembly to cloud infrastructure to grant proposals.

Credentials

Edwin Solares, Ph.D. is the founder of EdgeConsults, LLC. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of ESB AI Lab, a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit advancing AI for science, and a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and the Halicioglu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego, where he teaches Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data Analytics. He is a former Lecturer at UC Davis.

Edwin has authored 14+ peer-reviewed publications spanning crop genomics (avocado, maize, grapevine), computational biology methods, and machine learning applications in aquaculture. His research has been supported by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, the NSF-LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship, the UC President’s Pre-Professoriate Fellowship, the UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, and multiple federal and industry grants.

Our blended rate of $200/hour is benchmarked against federal reference points including the NIH salary cap and BLS occupational wage statistics. Consultant costs are allowable under 2 CFR 200.459.
